He used to be a Dark Side. Logan has his suspicions about that, but could never confirm it to be true. However, the Sides did know something about Virgil that Thomas does not. After many years with Thomas, Virgil is still told he is the one thing that keeps Thomas from being happy, the 'bad guy', even Patton tells him that...and so Virgil makes a desicion...and not all tales have a happy ending...
