After being forced to replace her sister as the bride of a mafia don, twenty-two-year-old Sofia must deal with the ruthlessness of the mafia world while battling her feelings for her new fiancé. Season 1 of Possession *** The daughter of a crime lord, Sofia just wants to be left alone to mourn the death of her first love. But when her older sister begs Sofia to take her place as the bride of the city's most powerful mafia don, Sofia must sacrifice herself to save her family. Gabriel De Luca was prepared for a businesslike marriage with a refined woman trained to be the perfect mafia queen, not the rebellious Sofia. Gabriel and Sofia clash over the details of their arrangement and the simmering tension between them. But as violence and betrayal erupt amongst the dons, a true partnership might be the only thing that can save them both... In a world ruled by Alphas, where Omegas and Betas were meant to serve, Mikhail lived in the quiet safety of his mother's love. He was a rare kind of Omega-mute, delicate, and unseen by the brutal world beyond their small cottage. His mother shielded him from the harsh reality of their hierarchy, whispering soft words into his ear as he traced the shapes of her lips with his fingers. But peace was fragile. One cold evening, his father returned-a man Mikhail barely knew, reeking of alcohol and desperation. With a cruel glint in his eye, he grabbed Mikhail's wrist, pulling him away from his mother's trembling arms. "You're worth more than you know," his father muttered, shoving him into the arms of a hooded stranger. Mikhail didn't need words to understand. He had been sold. Colton was a name whispered in fear, a beast draped in human skin. An Alpha whose touch left scars on both body and soul. He ruled with cruelty, his presence alone enough to make even the strongest Omegas tremble. Mikhail had heard of him. Everyone had. When he was thrown at Colton's feet, he didn't fight. He didn't beg. He simply met the Alpha's piercing golden eyes with silent defiance. The room was silent. Colton tilted his head, intrigued. "A mute Omega," he mused, his voice like gravel. "How will you scream for me?" Mikhail swallowed hard, but he refused to break. The Alpha's lips curled into a smirk, but there was no amusement in his eyes. Only hunger. Only the promise of ruin. "Let's see how long that silence lasts."

Shakespeare's *Macbeth* was in my syllabus when I was in secondary school. But *Macbeth* was just an appetiser, for I went on to get the complete works of his. It was as I was reading his sonnets that I tried to mimic his 14-line poems-and the rest is history. I did not simply read Shakespeare; I encountered him. In my "mimicking" of his sonnets, I learnt that a word could be stretched from its primary meaning to other "shades" of meaning. Poetry to me is like a pilgrimage, a path of mystery, a ritual that can transport the poet from where he is to where the subject of his writing is, where he achieves a lived experience. I deliberately chose a rhyming scheme of **AABB CDCD EEFF GG**, with which I wish to import an African voice into the sacred art of sonnet writing. ✨ *OnukaoguOkechi83 is a winner of the Shortys 2025. ---
