A short story/poem I wrote about the epic journey of a plastic-straw, inspired by the National Geographic / Wattpad contest. Save our beautiful oceans...there is no Planet-B. 💚🌏🐠🐬🐟🌍💙

Kai Kaila was born into a world without any oceans. She lives in a place that was once known as the island Hawaii, but is now simply called "The Cliff". The Cliff is the last of what used to be islands that has yet to topple into the oblivion that used to be filled with ocean. After seeing what used to be the island Maui fall, the inhabitants of The Cliff started to panic, trying to figure out a way to stop the same fate from befalling their home. Gathering all of the materials that they could, they made a rope that they hoped could reach down to what used to be the ocean floor. Kai was the one selected to go down and see what they could do to help fortify The Cliff, if there was anything.

This was my entry for the #PlanetOrPlastic competition 2018. We abuse single-use plastic every day. Many of us do not see the effects firsthand. Instead we live in a blissful ignorance. But, our planet is not a single-use object to be abused. Planet or Plastic? You decide.

My name is Athena, and I have a home by the sea. I'm a diver. Mostly as a hobby, in a way. I'm chasing a creature; a monster so terrifying it haunts my every dream. I've been following its trail, but it always eludes me. It always returns to the vast arms of the sea, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. Somehow, it escapes me. Not this time. This time, I know I'll find it. This time, it's coming to me. =============================================== This is a short story for the #PlanetorPlastic writing contest hosted by National Geographic! I hope you enjoy!

"People are God's creation so as the sea. If we can literally tidy up ourselves to avoid dirt and illness, why can't it be the same to nature?" This is to the future that we dream to live. Let us save our world from plastic pollution. #PlanetOrPlastic

It's 2289 AD, my planet Earth's pollution levels have increased beyond imagination, adversely affecting the weather and destroying our ecosystem. Globalwarming and the ozone layer depletion has led the sun's radiation to incinerate everything in sight, everything, but plastic. So we built our homes underground, safe from it all, using our advanced technology, trying to recreate our lives from the Surface but nothing is the same.We all have bulky plastic safety-suits on because we live in constant fear of being killed by the results of our treacherous acts to our planet. We speak through consoles that display what we want to say on a screen. And due to population control there are very few children to play with, but I don't mind, my great grandmother Rosie's spectacular stories of when she lived on the Surface keep me company. But this is my story, the only one I have of the Surface. ----------------------- This is my entry for the National Geographic's #PlanetOrPlastic writing contest. Completed: 04/11/2018

"Dolphins weren't a rare sight, but seeing them even a thousand times wouldn't take a shred of their beauty away." My entry for National Geographic's Planet or Plastic Contest, which seeks to bring awareness to the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans.
