Basically a Ranger's Apprentice short story featuring our favorite characters and a lot of emotions. Disclaimer: Most characters and events referred to belong to John A. Flanagan, author of the entire Ranger's Apprentice series. Is set after 'And About Time Too' in the eleventh book The Lost Stories. Headcanon story and could thus have happened.

This is a Rangers apprentice story. Have you ever wondered, what would happen if Will never stole that note from the barons office in Ruins of Gorlan? Retired Ranger Halt O'Carrick has survived many trials. A murderous brother, an impossible war, thousands of missions, two apprentices, Skandia, Genovesan poison, and living with Pauline for years. But when a rare sickness takes him over in his old age, there's no cure to be found. Can he survive? Only Will and Maddie seem to believe that the disease isn't worthy of the old Ranger's life. On a quest to save Halt, both will need to make sacrifices and stay one step ahead of time. Can they do it, and will it be too late? And if they can, will that be the end? *All characters belong to John Flanagan. If I create a character, I will mention it in the same chapter!*

Will has a brother named Cole. He is ten years older than Will and tries to find Will when they get separated. But he gets caught up in more ways than he can imagine on the journey to put his family back together. Morgarath II has taken over Araluen. King Duncan, Princess Cassandra, Sir Horace, Will Treaty, Halt O'Carrick, and the rest of the Ranger Corps have been taken prisoner. Any ally, friend, or supporter of King Duncan has also been captured. But just a day before their scheduled execution, the some 500 prisoners are rescued by a mysterious band of mercenaries, thieves, assassins, and street runners who call themselves the Hood Thieves. Soon, King Duncan, Cassandra, Horace, Will, Alyss, George, Halt, and Gilan are wondering just how much they really know about their country.

Gilan proclaims his love for Jenny, though what her response tells him is heartbreaking. Alone and lonely, Gilan soon finds out that Jenny has been taken from Redmont by a band of thugs. As Ranger commander, and Jenny's die-hard lover, he refuses all other Rangers for the mission, and goes for her on his own. Will he ever win Jenny's affection again?
