Jason has always felt like an outsider. Filling the shoes of the recently passed Cliff Burton is no easy task, not to mention a seemingly unwelcome one, based on the reaction from Jason's new bandmates. James in particular is grieving his loss with alcohol and rage, a combination that leads to his violent night terrors. But when James's armour is cracked, it allows Jason to see the singer in a new light. Maybe there's more to him than Jason thought.

Ever since the bus accident with Cliff, Metallica had spiraled down, with James at his lowest, Kirk's guilt eating him alive, and Lars struggling with his own feelings. James didn't want anyone else to take Cliff's place, but he knew eventually someone would. With Lars pushing the group out of the dark, they finally replace Cliff despite James' sorrows. When James meets Jason and starts to tour, he takes every bit of anger, sadness, and resentment on him. But James doesn't know that someone has seen everything he's done.

I turned my head towards him slightly, my hair sweeping over the back of my neck. Our eyes were downcast, he was looking at our hands while I admired his lips. I turned my head again and he lifted his head to press his forehead against mine. Our breathing quickened, we both inched our faces up towards each other, as if daring the other to make the first move.
