Francine Rivers was my favorite subject in college. I studied her instead of the textbook in Macroeconomics 101, which is why I almost flunked the first exam. Thanks to our bigmouth professor, the entire class knew I walked the line between academic probation and keeping my spot on Parrish University's basketball team.
The pretty brunette caught me off guard when she offered to help. After swallowing my pride, I decided to let her. What happened next surprised me even more. All of the evenings we spent studying and laughing in the cafeteria brought out feelings I'd never experienced with other girls.
I thought Francie felt the same way but was proved wrong when she stood me up at a party. Unwilling to completely let go, I settled for friendship as we got involved with other people. We drifted apart after graduation, but my soft spot for her never went away.
Fifteen years later, the truth about why Francie never showed up that night revealed itself.
