[ Lydia / Cat ] I read once on the back cover of a book, the most profound description. It prompted me to buy the book. See, the unfortunate surprise was that the book was actually terrible. Clearly, someone else had written that description, because no more profound thoughts or beautiful diction could be found within the novel. Well, ideally, my book won't turn out like that, but I'd go into it with little expectation if I were you. Who knows, maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised after all.

My name is Julie Quinn and I've been a New Yorker all my life. Life was good. I was swamped with work doing a job that I loved and I was dating the best boyfriend I'd ever had the pleasure to. I have always been a strong-willed and independent woman - or as my best friend puts it "control freak" - and even more after the accident, but what happened on the eve of my 30th birthday was enough to bring down Wonder Woman.

This novella was a Hugo and Nebula nominee twenty years ago. I lost both to Charles Sheffield -- whom I married five years later. Life sometimes really is just as strange as fiction.
