I feel like the very idea that a abuse, neglected child who was shy and just wanted to please his guardians, coming to a scary new world and suddenly feel brave and brash, unrealistic. The whole idea of him completely changing his character just because he was in a specific house is ludicrous. And even if he had been a Gryffindor (which is completely unlikely) he would have still been a Slytherin at heart. This is my version of how the events might have gone.
