The Diner has seen its fair share of the people of Midland, New York. There's Andrea, who doesn't quite know why she keeps coming back, save for the fact that it's the only place she doesn't feel constantly watched. There's Gregory, who people-watches, filling everyone around him with stories instead of filling himself with food. There's Milo, who often zones out as he waits on his patrons, dreaming of the day he can finally escape. And there's Monique, who simply likes the pancakes (and her waiter) a little too much.

Alice Yankee is a seventeen year-old girl with too big of an imagination, too big of heart, and too big of an agenda as this summer, she's set out for the city of angels for a journaling internship at the prestigous magazine company, 'Sassy.' Living at her uncle's beach house she's got a car in the frontyard and a beach in the back. She's welcome to spend her days strutting down the streets of Hollywood or relaxing on the sand (not without a very generous amount of sunscreen of course). Infatuated with this new lifestyle, she's planning on letting nothing and no one making it anything less than a "perfect" fantasy. Except maybe the fact that they lost her luggage. Or maybe the incredibly hot air that makes her hair frizz out? Or maybe even the intriguing next-door nieghboor who smells alot like cigarettes but treats her to strawberry ice cream everyday at noon.

"Hi, my name's Basil Olivier. My mom named me after the herb because she's kind of a psycho botanist-slash-cook. Olivier is French. My dad is French-Canadian and loves for me to tell people that, even though he was raised in Vancouver. I lived there for a while when I was little, but we moved to Washington when I was a three and I've lived here in Cobalt Bay ever since." He glances up at the tall pine trees surrounding us in admiration, then turns to me, the smile never leaving his face. "So now that I am no longer a stranger to you, tell me about yourself. What's your name, to begin with?" I squint my eyes at him for a couple of moments, then mumble, "Beverly." He nods. "Hi, Beverly." "Hi."

The year is 1965: a year thrumming with promise and hope and change all around the globe. But for two people, change seems out of the question. Their worlds are rigid, stuck, fixed—and completely contradictory to one another. Holly is a frazzled and reclusive mess from the wrong side of the tracks—well, the wrong side of everything, really—struggling to keep herself afloat as she copes with the loss of her nursing school scholarship two years before. Simon, on the other hand, is charming, arrogant, smart-mouthed and spoiled rotten—the only thing he has ever wanted for is a pair of proper lungs, as his own have been slowly ruined by the effects of Cystic Fibrosis. When Holly joins a peculiar non-profit agency in hope for nursing experience, their worlds are suddenly conjoined a little too close for comfort. Through bickering, old maps, collect calls and a great many letters, Holly and Simon are intertwined in a journey to find a future they never knew existed, suspended in the transience of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
