Please note: this is a third-draft story but is not revised. More than a century ago, dragons and the blue-eyed Shaderi flew together. Then they were brought down by jealous men who feared their power. Now blue eyes are a curse and dragons are a laughingstock, neither seen outside of slavery. Born a slave, her fair features mark her as a witch who is worth less than even the right to a name. He is a dragon who was raised in the arena, a life that left him unable either to fly or to breathe fire. Thrown together by an ambitious showman, they are united by a bond as old as the legends. Together, they have a hope for something more than the lives to which they were born, if only they can learn to trust each other. The words of a mysterious minstrel point them west, where rumors say their people live in freedom. The road there is hard, and at the end of it they find themselves a world embroiled in a secret war. This new world is ruled by a king who values tradition above all else. At every turn their new friendship is tested, and they are forced to decide how much they are willing to pay for a place to call home. He wants to help her learn the truth of where she came from, and she wants to give him what every dragon deserves: a chance to soar.

Looking at the motivational poster, I couldn't stop myself from snorting at the ridiculousness of it all. 'Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?' Who ever came up with that masterpiece was clearly not a wolf-shifter or had ever been a teenager. I would have killed to fit in - literally. ---- When you're a single, twenty-four year old wolf-shifter, that is unable to actually shift, pack is the over extended family you try to avoid at Christmas. No matter how hard she has tried to blend in, Samara Franklin has been cursed with not only the inability to shift, but to be what is termed a 'lone wolf'. She has no desire to be one of the pack, to follow her alpha's lead and has always preferred her own company over that of her family. For a race that is so co-dependent on one another, Samara just isn't. Yet it's more than that, Samara knows it, feels it, but what exactly it is, is something she has been unable to discover. Now with reports of someone hunting her kind, could the answers she's been looking for finally be found?

More than anything, Grae Winters wants to live an average, boring life. No surprises, no magic, and definitely no vampires. Unfortunately for Grae, she's anything but normal. Cursed with a power she doesn't understand, pretending to be ordinary is difficult when living in a city of the bizarre and supernatural. Grae's life only gets weirder when vampires start disappearing off Roccia Nera's streets, and she's coerced into searching for a master vampire's missing daughter. If Grae fails to find her, she'll have to take the woman's place in the master's cadre...for eternity. In a city where normalcy is overrated, Grae's life is about to get much stranger.
