Families were torn apart, children were left without parents, adoption agencies and foster homes had to be reestablished and, amongst the pitiful people who found themselves unlucky enough to have not gained any powers, there was an Irish man who broke his back to provide for his newfound family. Every year, 20 people were selected to fight for the king's amusement, put in a new environment and broadcast on live television, where they fought to the death to survive. This was the king's way of reminding us how low we are in his eyes. The one that survives gets to live in the castle as a servant to the king as a reward.
