Rosie Grey was only seven years old when she arrived at Mr Thompson's cotton factory. Now fourteen, she has become accustomed to the treatment of the workers and the harsh conditions under which they are forced to work. After an accident in the storeroom leads to her dismissal, Rosie must try to make her own way in the real world, away from the life she had grown used to. But despite being seemingly free from her life at the factory, Rosie struggles with the dark past that holds her captive, and she doesn't know if she will ever be able to escape the life she tries so hard to forget. Charlotte Whitfield had always known the people who raised her were mad and she had spent her entire adult life trying to distance herself from the reputation of it - from them. From the ridicule that seemed to stick to her skin even as Charlotte worked to unravel every one of the mad things her grandfather had done. Proving every thing was nothing more than imagination. She proved almost all of his theories wrong and was content to continue until a letter arrived for her during a lecture. Her grandmother had set fire to her family home and Charlotte was being summoned as power of attorney. An almost perfect opportunity to finally remove the shadow that was her family name. Almost perfect, because her grandmother isn't who Charlotte left years ago, and the fire might not have been as much of an accident as she claims. In charred remains, Charlotte finds bizarre anatomical drawings and detailed accounts of death records burned within an inch of becoming dust but there is enough for her to put together like breadcrumbs, and Charlotte isn't the only one looking for answers. The farther she goes, the more she stumbles upon, walking headlong into a world hidden just underneath her own and between the cracks in each rotting secret.
