What would have happened if Mavis never 'died'? What would happen if Mavis was an angel and Zeref was a demon? Everything would play out similarly but Mavis might get her happy ending. Mavis Vermillion is a part angel part fairy 13-year-old girl who spent her whole life in Tenrou Island (Tenroujima or Sirius Island depending on other translations) until now, that used to be inhabited by angels, most of which were tainted by darkness. Now, she is seeing the outside world of humans with her best friend, Zera and her new friends (humans) Precht, Yuri and Warrod. She longs for adventure (and unconsciously violence). Zeref Dragneel is a demon. After trying to control life and death against the great god, Ankhselam's will he gained a curse. His curse is one of contradiction. He can't die but things die around him. The greater the love he has for living things the more they die. Zeref loves every living thing and his dearest wish is to revive his dead brother. So as a result, everything he is near dies. People discriminated against him for 4 centuries. He doesn't think anyone could ever love him.

A young kid name Zeref has contracted a disease commonly known as The Curse and there are only 1 in 4 billion people immune to it because they have the disease. Zeref is bullied and avoided because of this so what happens when he decides to finally end his life? Warning! I'm so sorry if this depresses you.
