In East Arwick, a small town on the border of Vermont, there lives a 12 year old girl fighting a fierce battle, a battle waged within herself, where she has no allies. Her name is Brooke Ellis.
Diagnosed with severe ADHD and epilepsy, Brooke struggles to make it through seventh grade like any other girl, but with teachers who view her as dim, coaches who view her as weak, and peers who view her as a nobody, she feels more alone than ever. Brooke's only freedom is running, and the beacon of hope that lights her way is called the Springer's Race, the largest race in the group of towns known as Arwick, open to anyone in grades seven to ten. And for the first time, Brooke is eligible. She may just win this battle yet.
Through a series of events, each tearing away at Brooke's heart, she becomes less sure of herself, until a disaster from a nightmare leaves her and everyone around her devastated. Now more alone than ever, Brooke will have to overcome more challenge and heartbreak than she has ever encountered. Only if she succeeds will she make across the finish line.
