recently released from a decades-long exile, ex-Quaestor Kire Jarkeiwicz has been granted a year of freedom before he has to rejoin the Covinus, the vampire mafia who has had him under a short leash for over two hundred years. Desperate to escape, he travels to San Francisco to ask for help from the only vampire he knows who's not embroiled in the Covinus: John Lubbek, attorney at law. John is a Sanguinarian, a vampire who drinks from blood packs and treats humans as equals. He defends humans--particularly those known as Genetically Diverse--in the courts of law. After hiring his old donor's GD nephew as an intern--and the unexpected visit from the ex-Quaestor Jarkeiwicz--he gets the case of a lifetime, the opportunity to bring Sanguinarians out into the public eye and break the influence of the Covinus once and for all. But the Covinus has been around for thousands of years, and won't give up the fight--or their top assassin--so easily. And it's already hard enough for GD people to be accepted by humans; what's to say that Sanguinarians will be accepted as well? In this political thriller, it takes those that aren't quite seen as human to find out what it means to be a person.
