This story picks up in the summer of 1984 after the death of Stef Foster's older brother, Frank, Jr. Callie, having experienced her mother's panic attacks from an early age, asked Lena to stay because she thinks her mom is having a breakdown from the sadness of everything that's happened over the past year. Lena has a choice to make: leave everything behind and start a new life with her girlfriend in NYC or let Stef go once and for all. Will these two families finally come together and grow strong? Or are they destined to remain friends living on opposite sides of the country?

Being invited on a christmas trip with friends, Lena didn't realize that she would meet the person that would change her life for the better.

Stef and Lena finally buried the hatchet back in 1979, after the death of Lena's ex husband, Will, who had become close friends with Stef, and through that death, they realized that life is too short to remain at odds. Writing letters back and forth, they still remain engulfed in their own lives trying to show their kids that strength is in endurance and not throwing in the towel when life becomes too hard. Will these, two, ever again fall in love? Or will they just remain the best of friends with memories of the fall of 1969?

Stef Foster and Lena Adams are two army wives stationed in Oakland, California while their husbands are off fighting the Vietnam War in 1969. The pair have been living separate lives with no communication and the only thing that they have in common is Julius, both of whom claim is their best friend. Will they ever cross paths again? Or are they destined to live separate lives for the rest of theirs?

NOTE: This story will only make sense if you have read Hard Time, A Life Beyond, and a Life Deserved. It is somewhat of a prequel to the series. What was life like before Stef, Lena and Callie all entered Chowchilla for manslaughter? In this story we will follow their lives prior to being locked up, see how Stef rose to power in prison, how Lena survived and killed her abusive husband, how Callie narrowly escaped her mother's boyfriend, and ultimately coming together in jail and becoming a family. This is pretty much just a continuation of my story "Together". Stef and Lena are already dating at the start of this story, and are in high school. (You should read "Together" before you read this.)
