Twelve generations after the wreck of the ANZAC Far Stars Expedition on an ocean planet, two groups of survivors, Tangata and Pakeha, wage a sporadic war. Metty, a member of the Hine-ruru, the Night Guard, patrols the shore with her partner, the epigenetic canine Wuff. The capture of an intruder, who carries a message from her long lost father, sets her off on a voyage of danger and discovery.
