John Dutton knew that he couldn't keep having vets come in from town in the middle of the night to check on his horses who have gotten sick or a calf in his heard who'd fell down in a hole. He knew he needed to have a vet willing to stay on the land and be called when needed. So after discussing this with one of his old friends he was offered a man who had been a vet for years and is younger and can easily handle the hardships of ranch life.
