Он слушал, чуть подавшись вперед и немного улыбался, но улыбался так, что сразу было понятно, что он, хотя и считает ее хорошенькой, но не влюблен и влюбляться в нее не хочет, и даже притворяться, что влюблен - ни за что. Она тоже это видела и от этого голосок у нее дрожал, и в самом конце, на какой-то особенно звонкой ноте, она просто вдруг упала в раскрывшиеся двери, и последнее, что долетело до Риты и до курсанта было взволнованно-обреченное - ох! Бледно-мятный вагон умчал ее вглубь туннеля. Рита с курсантом остались стоять на платформе. Он, уловив какой-то непонятный, беззвучный сигнал, протянул ей зажигалку. Она не нашла сигареты, но была благодарна. Курсант нашел. Представился Александром. Подарил всю пачку и зажигалку. Рита хотела яростно его благодарить - такое у нее было настроение - но он куда-то ушел - то ли тоже упал в вагон, то ли уплыл вниз (а может и вверх) по дрожащему эскалатору.
