Prequel to The Edge of a Knife No lands are safe. Nothing is safe. The elves of Mirkwood struggle to keep their darkening lands shielded from peril. As Legolas, the youngest son of Thranduil sets out in hopes of aiding his older brother in driving back the consuming shadows. A simple, yet life changing twist. War secretly approaches. Darkness creeps up on all lands; slithering across slyly, whipping mercilessly at sweet tendrils of light and hope. A hidden force, one that has been carelessly overlooked, threatens to take more than just Legolas' life; but turn it into a living nightmare. The once lighthearted and gentle Prince must fight the overpowering darkness that forcefully claims his whole being. If he should fail, he will fade.

I wasn't always this way. I wasn't always a monster. I used to have a home, and a family. I was kind, good, filled with life. I never did anything wrong. So why did it happen? Why was everything that I loved taken away from me? Why was I stripped of my light? Why do bad things happen to good people? I have no answers, and I doubt that anyone does. My story is one of loss, betrayal, and pain. My story does not have a happy ending, and after everything I have done, I do not deserve one.

There is no escape, not for me. I have tried so hard to forget but the memories keep coming back. I don't sleep anymore, if I close my eyes my mind floods with their screams. The screams of those I've hurt, because I murdered the ones they love. I can't keep running, I have no where to run. I can't hide, they will find me. There is no way out of the endless shadows. I am a slave to the darkness. And no matter how much I fight, I will never be free.

Legolas has always wanted to be free and to be loved. He tried to run away once. His father, King Thranduil, was not please with him. Thranduil had chains placed around his ankles and wrists. "Do not try to run away again, my little leaf." Thranduil hissed as he connected the chains on Legolas's wrists to the chain on the throne. "Pplease, my king! I am sso ssorry!" Legolas begged. "These chains will remain upon you until Elrond comes." Thranduil spat as he sat on his throne. Legolas prayed to the Valor that the Lord of the Hidden Valley would visit soon.

Sauron has returned to Middle Earth. His power is complete with the one ring. As his power spreads over Middle Earth. He continually searches for Isildur's heir, who is the one being he fears. But Aragorn and his people have vanished. The free people of Middle Earth have been enslaved. Those who could have stopped Sauron are dead. There is no hope.
