كنتُ -إلى مدةٍ قريبة- أسلّم بالرأي القائل: إنّ دوستويفسكي يبدأ رواياته بشكل متقن لكنه ينهيها بشكل ردئ، كنت أتساءل وأنا أقرأ "الشياطين": ما باله أخذ يُعمِل في شخصياته قتلًا وتدميرًا وكأنّ خيوط الرواية أفلتت من يده؟! حدث مثل هذا أيضا وأنا أقرأ "المراهق"؛ فبعد أن صبّ دوستويفسكي سلسلةً من الفضائح فوق رؤوس أبطاله -وهو أسلوب مفضّل لديه- إذا بفضاء الرواية يتحوّل خرابًا بلقعًا كئيبًا تحكمه الفوضى. تركني وأنا أتصوّر الحبكةَ كرةً صوفٍ في يده تمزّقت وتشعّثت خيوطها. ‏بقيت أسلّم بهذا الرأي إلى أن بدأ يتشكّل في ذهني تصوّر محدد واضح لمفهوم "الفوضى" Chaos في أدب دوستويفسكي، وما إن اختمر هذا التصور وأخذ مكانه حتى صرت أفهم نهايات دوستويفسكي وأجدني أكثر تعاطفا معها. ‏لنتذكر أنّ دوستويفسكي بدأ حياته يساريًا ثائرًا على النظام القيصري مما أودى به إلى السجن. تجربة السجن غيّرته تماما، واضطرته إلى مراجعة كثير من قناعاته، وزاد من مرارة التجربة نوبات الصرع التي بدأت تداهمه دون سابق تجربة. ‏خرج دوستويفسكي من السجن وقد تحوّل من اليسار إلى اليمين. أصبح لا يكره شيئا كرهه الثورة بما تجرّه من فوضى، وهو ما سيهاجمه بضراوة في روايته "الشياطين"، كذلك هاجم الفوضى الأخلاقية في "الجريمة والعقاب" ، والفوضى الحسيّة في "الأخوة كارام
