Seit ich denken konnte existierte das Fraktionssystem der 5 Fraktionen: Die Ken, Die Altruan, Die Ferrox, Die Candor und die Amitee. Diese fünf Fraktionen sorgten für Frieden und Ordnung. Mein Name ist Elena, ich bin 18 Jahre und lebe mit meiner Schwester Tris Prior, meinem Bruder Caleb Prior und meinen beiden Eltern in der Fraktion der Altruan. Der Tag der Bestimmung rückt immer näher und ich werde mich entscheiden müssen, welche der 5 Fraktionen ich in der Zukunft angehören möchte.
