Years ago, before Elis was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, when Meredith was still a baby, when Thatcher still tried with his daughter, Elis and Thatcher hit yet another dry spell. And her response? To find solace in a man from a bar. A one time encounter. After that, she'd found her solace in her collogue, Richard Webber.
When she'd discovered she was pregnant, she used work as an excuse to avoid being home. When she did finally let Thatcher know, he'd assumed it was his, and she couldn't find it in her to tell him.
A scan at 6 months indicated a birth defect. Elis met with a lawyer that afternoon to put her baby up for adoption.
When she gave birth and went home, she'd told her husband that the baby was stillborn but that she'd opted to donate his organs. He didn't question it.
Now, Meredith is in her 3rd year at Seattle Grace Mercy West, a second year surgical resident, when a new group of interns start. Among them stands Danielle. Her red hair is pulled into a braid and her eyes are bright and ready to learn as she looks at the group of residents and attendings.
