sparrow never had an easy life. she never knew her mother, who died a few days after her birth, and soon after his mate's death, her father left his tiny daughter in the care of his sister, rosemary, and sparrow never saw him again. rosemary never liked sparrow much, so rosemary left, too, once all of her kits had grown up and gone away. so sparrow lived the life of a loner, hunting on her own, occasionally accepting human food, and avoiding unfriendly faces.
sparrow has heard plenty of stories of the vicious clan cats that live just beyond the town where she lives, but she is too clear-headed to believe any of the tall tales the old she-cats are always gossiping about. she often hunts on the narrow strip of land between the town and the clan's territories, hoping to catch a glimpse of one.
one day, her wish comes true. she meets a clan cat and is intrigued by their way of life. finally, the leader of forestclan accepts her into the clan, and sparrow is delighted. however, most forestclan cats do not trust sparrow, and give her the cold shoulder, no matter what she tries to do. she finds out that forestclan is still mourning the loss of their medicine cat, who left clan life several seasons ago for her kittypet mate, and is not very trusting to outsiders -- especially from the twolegplace.
sparrow is determined to win the approval of her new clanmates, and she works hard every day to impress them. sparrow's story is a story loss and pain, rejoicing and happiness, gratitude and anger, and finding out where you truly belong.
