When Britain declared war on Germany the 3 September 1939, parliament immediately passed the National Service Act. The act made it mandatory for any male aged 18 to 41 to register for service. Naive 21-year-old Harry styles never thought his draft notice would come. He wouldn't dream of leaving his dearest Vera Cromwell, especially after the summer he had spent falling in love with her.
Alas duty calls, and on the 9 October 1939 the day both Harry and Vera were dreading finally arrived. Whilst Harry was whisked off to war Vera was left wondering if he would ever come home, or if he would suffer the same fate his late father did years earlier in World War I.
When Harry is thought to have been killed in action Vera is crushed. However when Harry awakes with a penetrating wound to his abdomen, abandoned by his unit in a ghost town in Germany he is determined to find his way home without being killed by enemy troops. To pass the time he begins writing letters to his dearest Vera reminiscing of the summer they shared. As time passes, Harry begins to lose hope that he will ever get back to the woman he loves and fears that when he finally returns home-if ever, she will no longer be his to love.
