Esmond Curtis is een gewoon jongetje met een vrij normaal leven en een abnormale tante. Zijn moeder, Claire, is ernstig ziek en kan het huis niet verlaten. Ze wilt dat Esmond een stukje van de wereld gaat zien, iets wat zij hem niet kan geven. Zo belandt hij op een station, klaar om een duikboot te nemen samen met zijn tante Renee. Ze gaan naar Misthaven omdat Renee denkt daar een sensationeel verhaal te vinden om een artikel over te schrijven, ze is namelijk journaliste. Ze beseffen alleen nog niet hoe dicht het verhaal bij hun werkelijkheid staat.
