Cyrus Goodman and TJ Kippen didn't realize how important they were to each other until they first interacted in Jefferson Middle School's cafeteria, when Buffy told TJ these words: "You have to get my friend Cyrus here, a chocolate chocolate chip muffin." That's where it started everything. Cyrus Goodman was an unathletic dude, who had a crush on Jonah Beck. He was best friends with Andi and Buffy, and thought it would stay like that forever. He was gay, and only certain people knew. TJ Kippen was an athlete who was an intimidating jerk to so many people. He was sexist, a jerk, anything "bad" you could possibly think of. They say opposites attract, however, and this story is one of many examples.

"He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, very convinced that he was just seeing things, but when he opened them again the scene hadn't changed. He was still in his bedroom, looking at his neighbour's house, and 𝘛𝘑 𝘒𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 was still sitting cross-legged on the driveway, holding chalk in his hand and admiring the pictures he had very 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 just drawn." ~ Or the one where Cyrus discovers that there's more to TJ Kippen than he previously thought. An unlikely friendship forms between them, only for pesky feelings to become involved.

❝Okay, I'm going to gloss over the fact that you didn't deny being Cyrus's boyfriend, because did TJ Kippen just apologise to me?❞ Cyrus Goodman always sees the best in people. Including TJ Kippen, the enemy of his best friend, who is so used to being feared and labelled a jerk that he can't understand the kindness Cyrus shows him. He feels almost unworthy of being Cyrus's friend and takes it upon himself to be better. He wants to impress Cyrus. And after receiving life-altering advice from his mother, TJ discovers why this is.
