Un sognatore, isolato dalla realtà e da qualsiasi rapporto di amicizia, durante una sua passeggiata notturna incontra, sul lungofiume, una ragazza che risveglia in lui il sentimento dell'amore. Lei si chiama Nasten'ka, è una diciassettenne e viene subito colpita dal carattere timido e impacciato di lui, tanto che si incontrano di nuovo la notte dopo. Il romanzo si svolge in quattro notti, durante le quali i due si aprono l'uno all'altra.
