This is the story of seventeen-year-old Aleck Morganson, Borg, part human, part machine. When she was just a child, her body was nearly destroyed in an invasion by the savage Sharlakar, and she was changed into a cyborg to serve as a soldier in the war against them. Though still a child, her years of warfare against the Sharlakar have forged her into a nearly unstoppable fighting machine. And she has the severe physical and emotional scars to prove it.
The novel begins with a temporary reprieve from the horrors of the war, as Aleck sets about trying to build a normal life, helping her aunt and uncle on the farm, attending high-school, and forming a circle of friends with three other students: tech-genius Ben, the observant Odette, and Jareth, disgraced high prince of the planet Rillia. Though close to them all, her bond with Jareth is much deeper, and the two discover that they have a unique telepathic connection that gives them great power when they need it.
But the war still rages, and Aleck must eventually travel to the stars to fight once again. This time, however, she has the help of her friends, and her developing love for Jareth, to help her through the horrors she must face. In the end, she will need every bit of their strengths and talents to defeat the powerful forces that confront her and return to the common realities of the small-town world that she truly loves.
