Ella's brother learns something that will free all women, but then he goes missing. Along the way Ella meets new people and she also falls in love with a boy. The day has begun. The Collection. The one day that our government takes any one that seemed like a threat. I'm not sure if we look like a threat. Random people get taken usually. I lead to my bed and cry, what if our family is a threat to the government? My mother opens the door with a slight creak. It's she yanks my blanket off and kisses my forehead. "There is nothing to be afraid of," She says softly "they won't take us, I Promise." My whole body shakes with fear. "But what if they do!" I scream "shhh" she says "I Promise they won't."

She is also about to take a test that will determine her match and job, among other things. Her school, Reichenback Academy for Girls, isn't exactly what it seems to be. At Reichenback, Skylar trains to take care of the studying and disposal of Shifties, vicious shape-shifters that attempt to plague the populace. Though she shows exceeding potential at Reichenback, she is deemed better off at Bladeline University for Boys, where she will train to hunt, kill, and occasionally bring in Shifties for Reichenback Girls to study. When a twist in the story reveals itself, Sky finds herself not so opposed to the Shifties that she was taught since childhood to be evil.
