"Every year on the first of April, a man is set on fire. People must burn. People must burn like books."

Rick Lawson has never understood his place in society. Born like everyone else in the breeding facilities and genetically engineered to be homosexual, his whole life has been predetermined by the flip of a coin and recorded in a microchip implanted in his wrist. While most people accept their predetermined role, Rick feels fate has wronged him and he has been living a lie.
Yet after a terrible accident leads to a stranger's death, Rick is presented with a sudden and mysterious life upgrade. While he is ecstatic to be invited to the greatest college in the nation, Rick is unaware that a secret society is the one pulling the strings.
Abigail Summers, a government agent, informs Rick that like her he is an Imperfect, a heretic whose sexuality does not meet the criteria of society, and listed as one to be reconditioned. She tells Rick that a safe place for heterosexuals exists somewhere within the city, but getting there will be no easy task. The path to sanctuary is hidden by a series of clues and only upon slipping down a rabbit hole of governmental secrets can one hope to find the way.
In this forbidden romance, Rick learns that while love is beautiful and confusing, it can often lead to terrible decisions and horrifying secrets, secrets that not only get people killed but could potentially destroy the nation's perfect state.
