The library was dark and empty when Zhan pulled open the door, light from the hall spilling into the room. There was something wrong. What was that on the sofa? He flicked on the light, revealing his Lowry had moved from the wall to the sofa in the night. "Where are you?" Zhan demanded at the shadows. "Show yourself!" One of the shadows shifted and then Zhan wasn't alone anymore.

He sees a flash in his mind of his best friend, Xiao Zhan, who also happens to be his partner at work. Someone he always had a crush on. The thing that Yibo can't believe is what Zhan is doing in that memory. And why Zhan doesn't have any clothes on. It isn't until Zhan brings up the event that Yibo realizes what is happening to him. For the last fourty years, young beta men have been turning into omegas. Some as late as their twenties. Yibo is filled with shame when he realizes that's what's happening. He went into heat. He threw himself at his partner. He's now an omega. And he's carrying Zhan's baby. Yibo's whole world comes unraveled as he struggles with the changes his body is going through, as well as the changes in his perception of the world around him. He's no longer the tough beta cop he thought he was, but Yibo starts to realize what true strength really is.

The previously outgoing boy has turned inwards on himself. He no longer makes jokes, he smiles when anyone is looking, but the smile drops when nobody is paying attention. He laughs, but Lan Zhan knows they are faked. He flinches away from anyone, and Lan Zhan is sure that he could hear screaming at some point during the night. He is no longer creating mischief and breaking rules, and was often found alone, staring blankly into the distance. The only people who could touch him without him backing away was Wen Ning...and him. Lan Zhan realized this when he had grabbed Wei Wuxian to keep him from storming out of a room, and instead of fighting him off as he did with everyone else, he calmed. Unnerved by the drastic change in personality, and, though unwilling to admit it, worried for the slightly younger boy, Lan Zhan gets his father and brother to convince the Jiang clan to let them take Wei Wuxian back to the Cloud Recesses, under the pretence of having him attend more training, as an official Disciple in a few more months. The Jiang clan eagerly agreed, as such an opportunity was ra early given. Lan Zhan soon realizes, however, that Wei Wuxie went through far more than he was telling anyone, and that, just perhaps, Lan Zhan may be beginning to feel attracted to the boy. He wants to help him, and both boys find the road to love is not always straightforward as it seems.
