I would suggest reading A Long Time Ago, In a Galaxy Far Away to understand what is happening and what has happened, but it's up to you. There will be a summery below for you, if you don't want to read it. Long story short, Galaxy tells you the gist of what happened before the start of the story (Of course it is slightly different to CAUSE the alternate ending).
