“GROWING UP, WE WERE told stories of the skinwalkers. ‘Yee naaldlooshi’ translates to ‘with it, he goes on all fours’; the term ‘pure evil’ would have sufficed. A skinwalker was a man who gave up his last shred of humanity to be a creature of the night, to slink in the shadows as a coyote or fox and torment the rest of the tribes. They were shape shifters made of venom and evil. I had never thought of the skinwalkers, from the age of nine until my seventeenth year, in which I came face to face with one."
Brielle Evers never questioned her lifestyle. Growing up in an isolated community, where teenage girls are married to men twenty years their senior and books are forbidden, she takes comfort in the small things: her sister’s upcoming wedding, her Saturday visits to the local town, and the strange, beautiful boy behind the counter of Gas’N’Go.
But then, things unravel.
Brielle’s world shatters before she can find bearings; her world is a slow, cruel death. Her only escape seems to be the strange, beautiful boy who speaks a mystical language, and soon, even that isn’t enough. Facing a new kind of evil, Brielle knows one thing: she has to escape. For good.
