Neteyam no es más que un adulto tratando de encajar en su clan, buscando su lugar en no decepcionar a su padre y intentando descubrir que es lo que se supone que tiene que hacer para ser el próximo lider. Sin embargo ha adquirido la mala costumbre de salir por las noches a escondidas hacía un lugar en el bosque dónde puede permitirse ser sin tener que cumplir expectativas. Su camino se cruza con quién terminan desarrollando un odio mutuo, pero que después ese mismo odio se desenvuelta hasta crear un estrecho vínculo: Ao'nung, un Metkayina expulsado y rechazado por su clan y que residía temporalmente entre su clan.
