Lance can't decide whether he wants to live to his dad's expectations by joining the Air Force or live his own dream by joining the basketball league. His decision is put to a test when the NAIA and the Air Force offer full scholarships. Keith can't seem to fit in wherever he goes, and has to live in a constant fear of losing the few people he already has. When he finds that there are people willing to enter his life, he has a difficulty at expanding his personal barrier. This is especially difficult when his mother shows up for the first time in his life. On the last night of summer vacation before senior year, the two boys cross paths and accidentally become each other's movie dates after initially third-wheeling their friends. Starting out as friendly rivals, what the two boys don't realise is their lives are about to take a wild turn for the rest of the year. But maybe they're also witnessing some kind of cinematic experience.

Lance's arms were around him quick, pulling him close and lifting him up. Keith saw Lance spin him around but he couldn't feel it. He was numb. Keith ran his hands through Lance's hair, trying to capture this moment forever. He couldn't stop the laugh that bubbled out of him. He was so happy, and felt so warm and numb.
