Going through puberty, Gloria's joints hurt. The bones in her legs ached and the joints in her elbows creaked. Every part of her body just plain hurt. "Growing pains" her mother called them. Her body was stretching and growing and she was physically changing into an adult. Sixteen now she felt the same pain, only in her heart, when Henry stepped onto the bus that would take him to war. Anna was crying, Sam looked distraught, and she wondered why adults forgot to mention that growing up hurt just as bad on the inside as it did on the outside.

Kala bears, wicked mutations of Australia's koala bears (marsupials), are on the rise. Humans were destroying the koala's whole world, their trees. They were powerless to resist until, under pressure, a mutation occurred. Their eyes went from brown to blue and koala became kala. The mutation gave the kalas human intelligence. Stupid and wicked humans that is. They organised and set about a brutal bid for planetary domination. That's when Sirius, Earth's mentor and protector, stepped in. So began the Kala Bear Wars.
