Our favourite stories are about heroes, about good triumphing over evil. We want to hear epic tales of selfless people performing great deeds and overcoming insurmountable odds. If that's the kind of story you're expecting, then you'd best get back to whatever alternate dimension you came from. They call me Trig. I'm a bounty hunter. My line of work might not be particularly honourable, but for a cyber-human outcast with a sizable chip on her shoulder (specifically, several thousand microchips) it's the perfect fit. In a galaxy full of pirates, rebels and thieves, an abomination such as myself is considered more machine than girl. My bionic appendages make me the ideal killer, the best you could ever be unfortunate enough to meet. At least, that's what I thought up until the day I made a single, crucial mistake. Now, the inhabitants of some half-baked planet are singing my praises and calling me their saviour. I could get used to this new, cushy lifestyle if it weren't for a pissed-off former employer gunning for both my head and total planetary domination. The fate of the universe hangs in the balance. If ever there was a time for a hero, this would be it. But I already warned you, this isn't that kind of story.

Fear the dark. Bar the doors. Don't breathe a word. Wait for the Hooded Men to save you. The people of Nictaven live in fear of the night; governed by magic no one save a few can control, in a land plagued by demons and cannibal tribes, and isolated from all other worlds for centuries, they're right to. Only the Unspoken, a secretive guild of warriors linked with the land and its magic, provide any safety when darkness falls. For centuries, it has stayed like this. But in an abandoned crypt worlds away, Jordan Haverford is about to change that. It wasn't quite the holiday he had been hoping for. Plunged into a world where who you are and what you believe can kill you, a world of demons and knives in the dark and wars fought from behind the doors of the rich, Jordan's gentle Oxford upbringing isn't quite sufficient preparation. Instantly a pawn in a deadly game, separated from his sister and watched from the shadows by an assassin with a vendetta, he finds himself in the company of an Unspoken who has an uncanny knack for finding the Gifted - and Jordan can't seem to get rid of him. In a world where security cameras prove what you have done and databases define who you are, the few who know how to manipulate the technology can play God. They can change the future; they can alter the past. They can make big money, they can save the world, and they can get away with murder over and over again. Danielle Leaf grew up believing she was safe. Now she knows she was wrong. Award-winning author Jon Evans returns with new heroes and a compulsive, fast-paced story that examines issues of Third World exploitation and the extreme edge of anti-capitalist activism. Invisible Armies is Cold War suspense for the modern age, a thriller that looks behind the power of protests and the politics of big business. Reviews "Thought-provoking ... Invisible Armies is an intriguing, pacy read and Mr Evans shows great potential."-The Economist "A tough-as-nails technothriller... People who aren't morons and like thriller novels ought to read this."-Bruce Sterling "Evans has created a new genre, the travelogue as fast-paced action thriller."-Montreal Gazette About the Author Jon Evans's novels have been published around the world, translated into half a dozen languages, and praised by The Economist, The Times of London, and the Washington Post. A violent, epic, action-packed urban quest full of very eccentric, often hilarious, extremely dangerous characters who also happen to be animals - the wildlife of New York City, to be exact. Reviews 'Artfully imagined and constructed ... Through the eyes and hearts of Evans's furry characters, Beasts of New York gets at a lot of complex stuff: issues of identity, specifically nature versus nurture, are explored without being heavy-handed, and the real-life distances between bravery and cowardice, loyalty and disloyalty, hope and despair are often revealed to be just a hair's breadth apart.' (Julie Eakin, ForeWord Magazine) 'EPIC! 'Beasts of New York is about a squirrel named Patch who, out of desperation and need, adventures beyond his home in Central Kingdom to try and save it. While it seems that fate is conspiring against him, taking him further from his home than any squirrel has traveled, his journey is a necessary step to saving all of Central Kingdom from the evil trying to consume it.... 'This book reads like a fantasy novel, even though it is set in New York City. The horrors that Patch encounters at times seemed so unreal to me, despite knowing where they were. Seeing them from another pair of eyes gave some things a new air of terror and others one of wonder. 'This is not a light novel. It is very dark, and at times absolutely horrifying, but I connected so much to Patch as a hero that, in the end, I was left with tears of relief and happiness in my eyes.' Damien Vennar used to be a god. As a technomage, Damien had the power to create entire universes. Then, five hundred years ago, he gave it all up. He suspended the nanotechnology in his bloodstream and began to age--and eventually die--like anyone else. For centuries, Damien has lived among those who once worshiped him, his real identity fading into myth and legend. Hundreds of years later, when Ceril Bain finds Damien's old sword buried in his grandfather's garden, he is put on the fast-track to follow in Vennar's footsteps. Over the next six years, Ceril trains as a technomage aboard the Inkwell Sigil, a ship with the ability to travel between dimensions. Just as Ceril is preparing to undergo his Rites and finish his training, the Inkwell Sigil loses power. Stranded in space with no way back home, Ceril and four of his classmates are given their final assignment: go into uncharted territory, find a way back home, and bring back the one person who can fix the ship--Damien Vennar himself. While away, Ceril and his team find themselves in a predicament when they confuse an attempt at first contact with an attack and kill two of the world's winged inhabitants. They are shortly captured and imprisoned, and the only thing keeping them alive is their angel-like captors' belief they may be the subjects of an ancient prophecy about a group of magic-wielding messiahs. But that's impossible. Isn't it?
