There is more in this world than anyone realizes. Cory, Thomas and Virgil are in the middle of it again. They brave volcanoes, cattle stampedes and old enemies to survive in a world that seems lethal to them. They are targeted by Wilks, their car pushed into the frigid waters of the river, and the snow plow dropped on top of them. Wilks' final solution leaves the boys in a crushed car at the bottom of the river in mid winter. He dies knowing he has finally succeeded in eliminating his enemies.

The aliens, the Nimobes, have settled into their city many miles south of Jasper on the open land north of the Grand Canyon. They watch the people in Jasper, and have developed a relationship with them through the doctor that was supposed to spearhead the invasion, but protected the town instead. But hidden in the upper eschelons of their leadership, the war with Earth is about to take a dramatic resurgence, and Mordechai, the Nimobe doctor, is the only one who can stop it. The deadly spiders that the Nimobes waged a constant battle with back on their homeworld, stowed away on their ships and arrived in their new city with an agenda of their own. Cory, Thomas and Virgil visit the great tree, revered by Virgil's people and hidden deep in the caverns he lived in for most of his young life, to see if they can save it. Since the caverns were opened the tree has been slowly dying. They have to recover from the strange oath they've been put under, and return to normal life. But can they do it, or will them remain forever under the control of Wilks and his followers?

The boys are off on another adventure, though they keep vowing they are out of the adventure business. They find out that a quiet professor and his graduate-student wife have made a discovery that may revolutionize everything that science has taught us about evolution. It sounds so simple. Just tell everyone. However, in the background is an organization as old as time who's sacred vow is to keep men from finding these things out. "Ignorant men are easier to control," their leader says. "Enlightened men, men who think clearly and research issues without fear are impossible to control. What you have learned, Professor Stoddard, we cannot allow to get out. Ever." With Sheriff Brady in the hospital in Salt Lake, a victim of a car crash that wasn't an accident, the Morrises once more kidnapped and the secret organization trying to keep truth hidden, Cory and Thomas must once more step up to help. Will the boys be able to keep Brady safe in the hospital, rescue Cory's family and keep Thomas' 1992 Ford Explorer safe?

The boys, Cory and Thomas, find themselves at the center of the action again. This time an invading force has determined to make the Earth a garden place for them to settle in. But they also want to make us slaves under their control to use to their own ends. They promise peace on Earth, but the cost is high. This sample chapter is early in the book, when Major Remmick asks the boys to speak with Salah, Tobias' father, and ask if his people are the ones invading the Earth. He's clear he doesn't want the boys involved except to find out if Tobias' father knows anything about the invasion. Of course, Thomas and Cory have an impossible task: To stay on the sidelines while the world is coming apart or to get involved once again.

Neither Cory nor Thomas could imagine how a trip across the desert in a borroed 1992 Ford Explorer could end in a discovery that would rock the country. A broken drive shaft stranded them. The decision to hike home across sacred Indian lands took them to the glass canyon. The discovery of a wooden door in the wall of that canyon introduced them to a people who had hidden in the deep caves for a hundred and sixty years. Remember: He's only twelve and it was the middle of the night." "Maybe," Cory said softly. "But, you'd better check out Danny's arm." "What's wrong with his arm?" "His imagination left bruises on it." Thomas and Cory go on a Scout hike to help the Scoutmaster, Sheriff Thomas Brady, Thomas' father. They need time to unwind. The siege of the town, and Thomas' near death scared both boys. They had no way to know this hike would not be the vacation they imagined. Their most frightening nightmares could never equal the beast they encounter in the wilds of Southern Utah. He is a creature of legend and far more dangerous than any stories ever told about him.
