EDITING I hated the society and it's norms which were bestowed upon us from the day we were born and were required to be followed till our death. Unlike other girls of my village, I would rather ride horses and climb trees than gossip about boys or frilled dresses.I was a rebel, someone who never followed these rules. But all that changed after the decree was issued. ' I, Queen Apolla, Queen of Aramanda, Lady of the Isle and mother of Prince Christopher and John, hereby issue a decree on all young maidens and men of the village of Frodangram of the age of fifteen , to report to the Creston Castle by the following day. To ensure that everyone is reported , I shall send carriages to collect all those of age. No one of age should be left behind , if so , report to the castle immediately without further delay and if anyone is found violating the decree issued , the violator shall be sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. Her majesty , Queen Apolla ' Suddenly , I was surrounded by all those who followed these etiquettes as though they were a part of their lives. Women blindly obeyed men , without questioning even a single right, men were taught to be agressive and tough while us women were taught to be submissive, gentle , docile and obdient. I may not be a princess who could issue laws and enforce them on people but I am rebel , I could influence them........ All Rights Reserved. WATTYS WINNER 2020 Two interconnected murders, 64 years apart. One woman's search for truth and identity. Readers' comments: 'a masterpiece', 'impeccably written', 'amazing', 'superbly crafted page-turner', 'hauntingly beautiful', 'tremendous plot and character development', 'one of a kind', 'fantastic story telling', 'loved this book', 'a wonderful read", 'absolutely beautiful', 'brought tears to my eyes' and many more Wattys judging panel: 'This is VERY good. We were HOOKED from the beginning, and the writing and plot hold up throughout. This is a very unique, polished, well-written and well-researched piece.' Plot Set partly in rural England, partly on the sun-kissed coast of southerm Italy, The Painted Altar is a murder mystery mixed with romantic and historical elements (World War Two). Given away at two days old, Mary Rice has spent her life in the shadows. When discovering the suspicious circumstances surrounding her biological mother's death, she embarks on a journey which will shine a light not only on the truth but also on her own identity. Brief extract Suddenly, the door had inched open, half a wrinkled face visible behind the tautened chain. "Hello. Who is it?" The words I was going to say had of course been well-rehearsed, repeated over and over in my mind like a mantra, but now that the moment had arrived I found myself struggling to remember them. "Mrs Harvey... I think that you might... well, that you might be..." The door closed, then slowly opened once more, the chain this time unlatched. And there she was before me - half a metre away, within arm's reach. Thin lips gradually crooking upwards at each corner like the slow beatific kindling of a summer's dawn. "Oh yes love, I know who you are." Length: 70,000 words About the author: Originally from England but for the last 16 years I've been living in Italy. I hope therefore that the Italian aspects of the novel will have a certain gloss of authenticity.

Renee Griffin is gorgeous, loveable, undeniably popular, and has an uncanny ability of getting everything she wants. She is a cunning seductress, a loving daughter, a prima donna, and a cold-blooded murderer. This is not a story for the faint hearted. This is the story of a 21st Century psychopath. "'You've killed,' he breathed. His eyes had grown big, so big that they barely fit his face anymore. He didn't resemble Nathan at all. He was pathetic, and cowardly, and weak. 'I have.' Silence and darkness threatened to crush us both, the sound of his uneven breathing piercing through my eardrums. I didn't bother hiding anything in my demeanour - it was a relief to let the darkness out, to let it slip out of every pore and every cell. He was going to die. His next words were quiet, so quiet, that it could have been drowned out with the faint sound of cheers coming from the stadium. 'You're a monster.'"
