Adelaides parents died when she was twelve. Ever since then, she lived at Alfea - the school for fairies and specialists in the Otherworld. Terras family toke her in because they knew it was the least thing the could do for their close friends. When Adelaide turns sixteen she's finaly old enough to attend her first year at Alfea.
