Dawn is the first child born on Mars. Her entire world is one single habitat covered by a dome. The entire thing can be understood. She knows everybody on the planet and they all know and love her. Twenty-seven miners have landed on an asteroid to collect a certain mineral. The caves they enter turn out to be tunnels made by a creature of unimaginable strength and speed. Enter the monster's mind to see what it thinks of the miners intruding on its territory. Steve Blake is a resourceful ex space marine and he realizes that he must help the miners escape the creature. But how? He doesn't even know where they all are. Fight with Steve and others who need to face their own fears as they battle for their lives in the seemingly endless tunnels of the asteroid.

This book is a project in the manner of Exercise in Style. However, I am replacing the styles by genres. Therefore, it becomes an Exercise in Genre, where I will be attempting to recount the same story in different literary genres...

The story is told, at first, as a series of conversations between two of Curiosity's human specialists. My apologies to the people who do this in real life. I am sure your job duties are far more complex than I can possibly reflect here, though I hope you see a little of yourselves in Rick and Mike. These chapters are dedicated to you. The story also serves as a bit of a prequel to The Astronaut's Mom, covering events beginning in the near future, and up through the early manned missions to Mars. There will also be a third story entitled, "Martian Dawn," which will explore what happens when the barren scientific Eden that Piper finds on Mars in 2038 begins to get crowded.
