At this place, Zack is the sacrifice, and wanting to hurry out and find Rachel for her sake and his, he teams up with you, as he could not figure much out on his own. Throughout the time that the two of you spend together, you seem to form much more of an unbreakable bond to where Zack's kills start to be for you and only you.
