Deaton had always suspected a spark was buried deep within Stiles. When he proves it right he tells the alpha, Derek. Derek is in need of an emissary and Stiles would be perfect. But Stiles fights the spark within. He doesn't want to be tied to Derek forever, he hates the guy. Derek fights for Stiles but will Stiles fight for Derek?

Stiles and Derek have an agreement, a gentleman’s agreement, if you will. And it’s actually worked out quite nicely, on multiple occasions, in fact. The agreement being that if the situation should arise where it would be necessary to have a significant other close by, they would step in and pretend to be that significant other.

Derek never really had any complexes about aging, the way his muscles were just that tiny bit more strained after a long day on patrol, the greys that started popping up in his beard, he didn't really mind.
