Not only was Loki tortured during his little 'visit' there, but he also received cybernetic enhancements (like nebula). During the invasion of New York, he uses an illusion to make himself look like he did before he fell. Thor shows up and doesn't realize that anything is wrong, and all it takes is a mild anxiety attack, a magic book, a memory viewing and a couple of OCs to make the Avengers all protect Loki like one of their children.
