Emma Woodhouse, aged 20 at the start of the novel, is a young, beautiful, witty, and privileged woman in Regency England. She lives on the fictional estate of Hartfield in Surrey in the village of Highbury with her elderly widowed father, a hypochondriac who is excessively concerned for the health and safety of his loved ones. Emma's friend and only critic is the gentlemanly George Knightley, her neighbour from the adjacent estate of Donwell, and the brother of her elder sister Isabella's husband, John. As the novel opens, Emma has just attended the wedding of Miss Taylor, her best friend and former governess. Having introduced Miss Taylor to her future husband, Mr. Weston, Emma takes credit for their marriage, and decides that she rather likes matchmaking.

For all her life, Ember Matthews never feared the unknown, only a life that never changed. So when a stranger opens a door to Auchterton, a hidden realm ruled by ancient Houses and older grudges, she chooses to step through. But choice has consequences. Auchterton is a realm fractured by ambition: power is a weapon, Loyalty is a currency, and silence hides more than it protects. Magic lives in blood and bone, cities rise on the backs of old secrets, and a rebellion long thought dead is beginning to stir. Some fight to break the old order. Others will kill to preserve it. And between them all lies a secret worth igniting war. Drawn into the quiet violence of this realm, Ember must learn quickly who deserves her trust before it becomes a blade turned toward her. Because in Auchterton, secrets don't stay buried-and Ember is no longer invisible. For far beyond the horizon, a man cloaked in black has already begun hunting her name. Some embers are meant to die. Others are meant to burn. Highest Ranking: #6 in Fantasy
