When someone is born they get a Lovenote. It is a notebook that they can write in and the words go directly to their soulmate. It can not be destroyed, or made. These gifts were given to the humans, by the Seikamis. Life gods. They are the very opposite of Shinigamis. They don't live in heaven, but in a realm outside of it. Much like how the Shinigamis don't live in hell. Light always had his Lovenote, but never wrote in it. He felt it wasn't necessary, and that he should focus on school. L on the other hand wrote in it all the time. He thought he didn't have a soulmate since Light never wrote in it, so he wrote whatever he wanted. Except cases. He never wrote about them.
