Well... That was the plan. What he didn't expect was to fall into the VOID while trying a̶n̶d̶ ̶f̶a̶i̶l̶i̶n̶g̶ to save someone who was pushed into the VOID before him. Now really How SOULless can his rival be? Especially after that stunt he had pulled.
