After losing his father to cancer and never knowing his mother, who died a little bit after he was born, he is forced to move with his father's co-workers...or soldiers. His father was the former Red Leader, which means he is now to be taught to be the next one. He moves to the base and has to go to a normal school to look "innocent". The kids make fun of him, especially a kid named Tom, who he is forced to hang out with, since his only friends are Edd and Matt. He becomes depressed, but never shows it. One faithful day, Tom finds out everything by accident...it changes everything.

Tord's been seeing someone else around their freshman year of college. Tom eventually finds out from their friends, Edd and Matt. Tom confronts Tord about it and the Norwegian boyfriend admits he's lost interest in him. Tom doesn't want to believe it, but Tord makes a deal with him to end their relationship mutually. Years later, they'll come to face each other again. But at what cost?

He doesn't talk much to anyone except a boy named Tom, who also lives at the orphanage since his parents were both killed. Tord talks so little, that even when they grow up to be in high school, he still can't talk well and has an accent, even though he has lived in Britain for 12 years. He's also been given the name "Mute" since nobody ever heard him talk. At one point, he is forced to talk, and things only get worse.
