Blessedkit, born to ShadowClan parents, discovers quickly that he is quite "special" in the eyes of his Clanmates. His brother, Rottenkit, is presumably a filthy-hearted cat who would have become a murderer if he had been allowed to be, and therefore was murdered in the womb by StarClan. And now, Blessedkit's become the unwilling celebrity of not just ShadowClan, but all four Clans. As time progresses and Blessedkit is driven further to madness by the constant unwarranted praise of his Clanmates, it's eventually clear that StarClan made the wrong choice.

Life leads us down paths we can't anticipate, and for young Redwhisker, it seems to never stop giving him twists and turns. He's always been maltreated, cast out, thrown aside, and willfully ignored by his own Clanmates - and he's known why for ages. After all, who could expect any different reaction to a fox living in a Clan of cats? Redwhisker finds it hard to believe he deserves any respect or equality with his Clanmates. He is sure that he will remain an outsider until he dies, and even then there's no guarantee of him making it to StarClan to reunite with the cat who mothered him. These beliefs, though, are shattered by a chance meeting with someone who may be an even stranger anomaly than him. He's thrust into conflict, between Clans and between himself, as he questions his innermost expectations and realizes he's been playing the game wrong this whole time. Highwings, a new and happy warrior of ShadowClan, finds that she comes into the scene at a poor time. Many of the Clans have started acting suspicious. WindClan's leader is a brute, ThunderClan's leader snappy, and RiverClan's leader distant. Even ShadowClan, which ironically holds itself up higher than the other Clans in this time, begins to feel unsafe as something unravels within. And Highwings is facing her own personal problems. Being a socially inept she-cat with no desire for a mate or kits leads her into more trouble than she asked for, and she finds herself an outcast in her own Clan. Follow Highwings as she makes mistakes, friends, enemies, and history while trying to live the life she wants.

Dawncurl is born into perfection. Her mother always told her that life was a blessing and that she should never take it for granted. However since the birth of she and her brother, she was instantly cast aside by her father who favored her brother and claimed he would be heir to the throne. However, the roles will soon reverse when Dawncurl is discovered to be a skilled strategist and combatant. Not just skilled, but a prodigy. With this information she is finally given the praise she's always craved from her father. Along the journey, she finds out her family isn't so perfect and she will become the victim of it all. As a looming darkness unfolds, Dawncurl will fall under the hold of her father. Adoring his praise, she goes to grave measures to ensure that she keeps it, no matter the consequences; even if it means hurting the cats that she loves most.

As tree falls after tree, Icestar knows that he has to lead everyone away, even if it meant to drag the remaining proud leaders with him. Meanwhile, Icestar's kits face troubles as well. Dewkit, born with the looks and name of Dewstar, gets judged daily as if nobody would accept him for it. Ravenkit lets her ambitions get the best of herself. Time and time again, she only causes trouble, and at these extreme circumstances, extreme measures must be taken. Both kits realize that their paths are much different than their Clanmates---especially with a new prophecy on both of their paws.
